Yonanas Machine: The Kitchen Frozen Dessert Maker

Home 5 Kitchen Accessories 5 Yonanas Machine: The Kitchen Frozen Dessert Maker

The Yonanas machine is a kitchen accessory that is primarily used as a soft serve ice cream maker.  I admit it.  We were skeptical about this seemingly magical machine.  My daughter asked for the Yonanas machine as one of her Christmas gifts.

I assumed it was a gimmick that would be used once and put into the depths of our cabinets to be forgotten.  Well, we did our research and could not find a bad review.  People raved about the machine.  So, we decided to take the plunge and purchase one and we were not disappointed.  With simply frozen fruit, the Yonanas machine produces a creamy, delicious, soft serve treat.

How does the Yonanas Machine Work?

The Yonanas Machine consists of a stable base and the grinder shoot parts.  The Yonanas machine washable grinder shoot parts must first be put together onto the base of the machine before you can begin making a frozen treat.  The grinder shoot does consist of a handful of parts, but it is pretty easy to put them together once you do it once or twice.

Also, before you begin and start assembling the grinder shoot, the frozen bananas and other fruit should be removed from the freezer so that it is slightly thawed by the time it is used.  If you forget to remove your fruit from the freezer ahead of time, you can use the microwave for 30 seconds to soften the fruit a bit in order to skip the thawing step.

After the fruit is ready, you can assemble the grinder shoot parts.  To assemble, the bottom cap, gasket and blade cone are placed into the chute according to an easy diagram in the instruction booklet.  The parts are locked into the machine.  The plunger is placed into the chute and the machine power can be turned on.

After the machine is powered on, you can remove the plunger from the chute and start making your treat.  For example, if you are using bananas and raspberries, start by placing half a banana and some raspberries into the chute.  Then, you can use plunger to push the fruit down into the chute.  The treat will emerge from the bottom of the chute with a consistency similar to ice cream…and the process can be repeated until there is enough to enjoy!

Fruit Combinations for the Yonanas Machine

We love our Yonanas for our family of four.  Our favorite fruit combination is the basic, yet delicious banana raspberry or banana strawberry blend.  Simply start with bananas into the machine and alternate with raspberries or strawberries.  Sometimes, we top that with chocolate chips…amazing!  There are several great recipe books to choose from:  Yonanas: Frozen Healthy Dessert Maker Cookbook, Yonanas Frozen Treat Maker: The Ultimate Cookbook with Tasty and Healthy Frozen Fruit and Ice Cream Recipes and Yonanas Frozen Treat Maker: The Ultimate and Complete Manual. We have heard banana, mango and pineapple is a fabulous combination too.  Use the bananas alone or in combination use any fruits – apples, pineapple, blueberries, strawberries, grapes, oranges, melons or mangos.  That is not a complete list…and you can even sneak in things like cauliflower and avocado with being detected to boost the health factor.  Any of the fruits in the list alone will produce a delicious sorbet.

Yonanas Machine Pros

First, we were amazed that the Yonanas machine produced a soft serve frozen treat that had a great taste and texture.  The treat can definitely compete with soft serve ice cream or frozen yogurt.  Because it is made from only fruit, it is also a healthy alternative to ice cream.  Also, the machine itself is easy to use.  Quickly assemble the machine, turn on and go.  The Yonanas machine is compact and easy to store.  It comes with it’s own recipe book.  It is also very easy to clean if you clean it right away.  All of the Yonanas machine removable components are dishwasher safe, but we found that a quick rinse immediately after use is just as easy.

Yonanas Machine Cons

Although we loved the treat that the Yonanas produced, we found that if you don’t rinse all the parts immediately, then the parts are tricky to clean.  The fruit will dry and stick to the inside of the pieces if you don’t quickly wash the parts, making it hard to clean.  Just be sure and rinse the pieces immediately after use.  It is also worth mentioning that most of the Yonanas recipes contain bananas as the base.  This gives the recipe the creamy ice cream-like texture.  If you don’t include bananas, it is more of a sorbet.  Finally, the Yonanas machine is also a bit loud, but it only takes less than a minute to create a treat.

Common Questions Answered

Does the Yonanas Machine waste fruit?

We did not find this to be true.  When you take the machine apart to wash it, you can easily scoop any fruit left inside the parts into your bowl with ease.

Is the Yonanas Machine loud?

Yes, it is loud.  …but, you can make a bowl of your custom treat in a few minutes.  So, it is very tolerable for a short period of time.

Is the Yonanas Machine hard to rinse off?

Yes and No.  So, if you take the grinding mechanism apart and rinse the parts off right after you are finished making your treat, yes, it is a piece of cake to clean the parts.  Give them a quick rinse to fully clean and air dry.  If you leave the machine and let the fruit dry inside the grinding mechanism parts, it is more of a chore to clean.  I find that if this happens, I throw the parts into a bowl of water and come back later to rinse quickly.

Summary

With a 4.5 start rating and almost 7000 reviews at the time of this article, people are thrilled with the Yonanas Machine.  It produces a healthy alternative to ice cream.  You can customize your flavors with whatever your heart desires.  With only frozen fruit, a frozen treat that rivals ice cream emerges from the Yonanas Machine with little effort.  So, go ahead, give the Yonanas machine a try.  We don’t think that you will be disappointed.
