Kitchen Island Decorating Ideas

Decorating with Fruit
Decorating with fruit is one of my favorite options to add interest to a kitchen island. Have you ever heard the saying – out of sight out of mind? With fruit front and center in the middle of the island, it will get eaten.
Modern Farmhouse with a Basket
Modern farmhouse decor is probably my favorite choice. Baskets to corral your goodies are often available in your house. It is easy to incorporate things you commonly use in your kitchen into an attractive design. Using candles, pitchers, wooden accents and flowers you can mix and match things to your liking.

Dish towels and fresh flowers can soften the display. Modern farmhouse can blend with alot of different kinds of decor. Keep in monochrome or style it with a blend of similar colors. Add a set of wooden beads for a special detail. Touches of black iron and shades of white also look beautiful.
Arrangement on a Tray
An arrangement on a tray forms a cohesive display that is pleasing to the eye. Often, islands are rectangular. So, a longer tray often works better to be proportional. For your base, try to contrast. For example, a wood tray will add warmth to a stone counter. While if your island is wood, a marble tray might look fabulous.

Fresh Flowers
Something as simple as some tulips gathered in a vase can fill the need and provide interest. The majestic hydrangea always makes an impact. You don’t have to use flowers when it comes to plants. Just fresh greenery, a beautiful fern or grass adds a natural element to your kitchen.
Seasonal Display
Your kitchen island is a great spot to display your seasonal items. Use either, white, glass or neutral to phase your seasonal items in and out. I use clear glass jars on my island to hold the items.
Vases
A vase or vases is always a good standby and usually we have one available. If you have one large statement vase, go for if and just use one. In order to balance with the size of a kitchen island, you usually want it pretty big. If not, you can use the rule of 3s. Things that are arranged in odd numbers are usually more visually appealing and memorable.
White or clear glass vases always work great because they blend with just about any decor and allow you to put a variety of items in them. Vases are really easy to find and use in your kitchen island decor.
Tiered Tray
Tiered trays work wonderfully if you need some actual functional space for fruit, desserts or everyday items. You can separate different types of fruit on each level and it looks gorgeous. They come in steel, wood, painted and many other materials.
You can also form an attractive display by gathering interesting items of different materials on each level. It is easy to switch out the items and clean. Because of the size, a tiered tray looks great on an island because it can handle the size of the island. A tiered tray is a great alternative to a one level tray or basket and gives you a bit more space.
Plants
A pop of green with plant in the center of your kitchen island may be the obvious choice, but you can get a bit creative with your plant choice. A small culinary garden down the center of you island is not only attractive, but functional as well. Or, a large centerpiece plant can look gorgeous too.

The only drawback to a plant is that it is a bit of maintenance. You of course need sun and a bit of water. If you have a light island, the bits of plant that drop may be a bit of a nuisance. A plant is an inexpensive option to dress up your island.
Cookie Jars
The old classic cookie jars with a modern spin look fabulous center island. Popularized by social influencers, fill simple glass jars with grocery store cookies artistically stacked to form a modern centerpiece. Almost too beautiful to eat the cookies, the jars offer a quick snack.
Dough Bowls
A long wooden dough bowl is a perfect addition to a kitchen island. Dough bowls date back to colonial times. A dough bowl is a long rectangular bowl often carved out of wood that was traditionally used to knead brea. A dough bowl is the perfect size for long kitchen islands.
A dark wooden dough bowl is full of character and provides a great contrast to a modern, light colored island. A vintage dough bowl can be extremely pricey, but there are affordable reproduction dough bowls available. If you don’t want to spend the money on an authentic dough bowl, you will not be able to tell the difference with the great reproductions on the market.
Lazy Susan
Today’s lazy susans are not your grandmother’s lazy susan. A lazy susan is a spinning tray or turntable that allows easy access to all the items on the tray. They usually rotate 360 degrees. Lazy susans now come in gorgeous materials and styles. They come in marble, wood, steel, glass and of course plastic. There are even tiered lazy susans.
A lazy susan can keep everything that you need at your fingertips and look great while doing it. It is a super convenient, space saving option to decorate your kitchen island. You should definitely look into investing in a countertop lazy susan for your kitchen.
Cake Stands
You might not think of your cake stand that you only pull out at holidays as something that can be used in your everyday decor. You just have to think of it in a different way. Can you put fruit underneath? Some plates? With just a little creativity, your cake stand provides a display platform.
Drinkware
You can always bring out your beautiful coordinating drinkware. Add a decorative tray to bring it together. It is handy to have out for guests and easy to clean.
Your island is probably the center of attention in your kitchen. Decorating your kitchen not only adds character, but can be functional as well. By taking the time and finding a decorative display, you can instantly transform your kitchen.
